What the hell is a SyberJet?

I would have made the headline ‘WTF is a SyberJet?’ but my chief editor doesn’t allow me to write things like thatâ€Ļ🤭

Alrighty! When someone mentions ‘comfort’ in conversation about a jet, it usually refers to cabin size.

The bigger the cabin, the more space you have to move around or move away from someone you might not want to sit beside.

Comforts that come with larger cabins include:

  • Bigger seats, sometimes reclining flat

  • Divans that turn into beds

  • Enclosed lavatories, so you don’t have to do your thing on the other side of a curtain.

Incorporating these comforts into the narrow tube of a light jet takes great design skill and imagination.

But there’s one comfort that doesn’t require a larger cabin. This is because it’s invisible. You cannot see it, only feel it.

It’s nothing to do with the size of the seats or the amount of headroom. It’s all about how your body reacts to pressure.

Not psychological project-deadline pressure but actual physical atmospheric pressure.

When you fly, you sit in a low pressure environment for a long time. This causes all sorts of issues like swelling, headaches, fatigue etc.

At 41,000 ft, the atmospheric pressure is so low, you pass out.

That’s why a jet’s cabin is pressurized. When you fly at 41,000 ft, the cabin pressure is kept artificially high, such that the body feels like it’s at 8,000 ft.

Manufacturers understand the ill effects of low pressure on the body, so to get a cabin comfort edge on the competition, they use cabin altitude as a design/selling point. The cabin that can hold higher pressures wins.

For example, Bombardier made a notable improvement in the Challenger 3500. The cabin altitude of the Challenger 350 is ~8,000 ft at 41,000 ft whereas the newer model 3500 boasts 4,850 ft.

SyberJet is claiming to make the competition eat dust on this design point.

They’ve designed their fuselage to hold high pressures. So high that the SJ36 promises sea level cabin altitude at 41,000 ft.

Your body will think it’s still lying on the beach, not cruising above the clouds with swollen feet.

Is this enough to make this jet a market success? I don’t think so. But there’s more to the SJ36.

We’ll get to that after a very short version of a long story.

The original Swearingen Jet concept surfaced in 1986 when Ed Swearingen, a US aerospace engineer, announced a new 6-8 passenger light jet.

30 years and four company ownership changes later, the program will make an appearance this October in Vegas at NBAA-BACEâ€Ļ for the second time.

SyberJet will showcase the SJ30, only 10 of which they built between 1999 and 2009.

Also on display will be a full scale mock-up of the new stretched variant, SJ36.

SyberJet is on the offensive!

And cabin altitude isn’t the only thing they’re boasting about.

They’re calling the SJ36â€Ļ“The World’s Fastest and Farthest Flying Light Jet”.

Current production competing light jets are maxing out just over 2,000 nm, i.e. the CJ4 Gen 2 and Phenom 300E.

The SJ36 promises 3,000 nm. That’s US coast to coast. That’s NY to LA. That’s meaningful.

And it’s fast.

The SJ30 has been on the road recently, setting new speed records.

On August 18th, it flew 1,830 nm from Jacksonville to San Diego at an average speed of 505 mph doing the trip in 4 hrs and 18 minutes.

The previous comparable record for this was set in 2013 by Embraer’s Phenom 300.

The Phenom 300 did two legs, from Melbourne, FL to El Paso, TX and El Paso to Long Beach, CA. This trip took over 6 hours at an average speed of 339 mph.

So while most manufacturers are maximizing comfort with more spacious cabins, SyberJet is doubling down on its narrow tube, light jet design and boasting they’ll get you to your destination in one hop, faster for less. Pricing is expected to be around $14 mil.

Flight testing is planned for 2027 with target first deliveries in 2032. All ears for October 19th in Vegas to hear what CEO Trevor Milton has to say.

Ownership costs - Praetor 600 vs Falcon 2000LXS vs Challenger 650

Three jets in the Super-Mid Jet category, or some may refer to the Falcon 2000LXS and Challenger 650 as ‘Large Cabin’.

Regardless, they all get you 4,000 nm across the world before you need to refuel. That’s London to Chicago easily. London to Miami with a light load and favorable winds.

The Praetor 600 has the lowest cost of ownership. But this isn’t driven by fuel burn as some might suspect.

Dassault builds efficient machines, so despite the 2000LXS cabin being 10” wider than the Praetor 600, it still burns less fuel. Impressive.

Maintenance cost is what tips the balance between the two. The Praetor is around 20% cheaper to maintain than the Falcon and almost the same as the Challenger 650.

The Challenger 650 is the heaviest jet in the line-up and comes with the widest cabin. Consequently, it burns the most fuel, making it the most expensive to fly. Its General Electric CF34 engines are the cheapest to maintain though, so it wins on this line item.

Two models going from strength to strength, both with a 3yr+ waitlist for newâ€Ļ Bombardier’s Challenger 3500 and Embraer’s Praetor 600.

Both models are adored by the whole market spectrum - individuals, corporates and fractional operators.

The first Challenger 300 delivered in 2004. The Praetor 600 is a newer entrant first delivered in 2019.

The Legacy 500 came before the Praetor 600, first delivered in 2014. After building 84 Legacy 500s, Embraer extended the range and renamed it the Praetor 600.

167 Praetor 600s are now in service, Embraer delivered 33 in 2025, and should beat that number in 2026.

What’s the pre-owned Praetor 600 market up to?

Of the 167 in service, nine are listed for sale.

Availability has increased significantly over the last few months. But this chart is deceiving. Of the nine Praetor 600s for sale, five are already deal pending. This market is strong.

Used Praetor 600s range in price from $22 to $30 mil.

The current average ask price is $25.5 mil. There has been little to no depreciation in Praetor 600 values over the last 36 months.
